First off, let’s take a look at the venue for the Ryder Cup 2010. The host course is named the The Twenty Ten Course. Now, since this Ryder Cup takes place on European soil, you may assume that the course, like many a British Open course, is an old English course with not much yardage behind it. However, this is not the case.
The Twenty Ten Course is found on the grounds of The Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, South Wales. As you may infer from the name, it was designed specifically to be the host of the 2010 Ryder Cup. The course measures a robust 7493 yards and plays to a par 71. Now, let’s take a look at the squads of each Ryder Cup team and break down who is favored to win this event and who will actually win the Ryder Cup 2010.
When you look at who is favored to win any sporting event, you can visit all the beleaguered columnists you favor but they are not in it for the money. You must turn to the experts who are creating the odds and the current betting odds favor the Europeans to win the event.
As we look at the teams, Europe would certainly seem favored to win the Ryder Cup this year. However, I tend to think Colin Montgomerie made some huge guffaws in his Ryder Cup captains pick. He overlooked two outstanding European golfers in Justin Rose and Paul Casey, who is ranked #7 in the official world golf rankings. The heavy hitters on his squad are Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell, who each took home majors this year. They are followed by better known performers Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, and the young, hot Rory McIlroy.
On paper, America has certainly got talent with the two leading players in Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. However, Tiger still needs to prove that he has learned how to drive a golf ball and Phil needs to recoup his Master’s Magic. Of course, there are some other major winners in there including Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson, and Stewart Cink.
The problem, historically, has been passion. The European team simply gets more fired up than the American side. That all changed in the 2008 Ryder Cup when Paul Azinger designed little mini-teams and matched personalities perfectly.
This all leads us to the role of the coach when determining who will win the Ryder Cup 2010. In most people’s estimation, Colin Montgomerie has already proven faulty judgment and management with his captain’s picks. If Corey Pavin, on the American side, employs similar tactics to his omniscient predecessor, the result will be the same.
